Family Planning Appointee Resigns

A controversial appointee to oversee family-planning programs at the Department of Health and Human Services has resigned. Erick Keroack had come under criticism as the former head of a medical organization that discourages contraception and advocates abstinence until marriage. On Thursday, Keorack told his staff he was stepping down because Medicaid officials had taken legal action against his private medical practice in Massachusetts. No further details were released. Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said: “It’s a good day for women’s health. … The Bush administration must replace Keroack with a legitimate, mainstream public health expert who supports family planning and access to birth control.”


Probe: Senior Interior Official Interfered in Endangered Species Studies

And an internal investigation at the Interior Department has concluded a top-level senior official repeatedly interfered to effect policies in favor of private landowners. Julie MacDonald -- the deputy assistant secretary for fish and wildlife and parks -- is said to have altered scientific reports to minimize endangered species protections and disclosed confidential information to private groups seeking to change policy decisions.

There is a true danger in the current vapidity of the national pundit class. Surely, a pundit corps that could rally itself to be outraged over Arkansas land deals could manage to eke out a bit of interest in the thought that staffers to the President of the United States and other Republicans were, as it now appears, using their government offices to encourage criminal indictments of their foes and protect against the indictment of their friends. The evidence suggests that McKay and Iglesias, at minimum, were removed from their jobs in large part -- and that "in large part" is itself being exceedingly generous to the administration -- because they refused to file politically motivated indictments against Democrats intended to help Republicans skew election results.

Despite befuddled mutterings to the contrary, that's a big deal. Corrupting a foundational principle of our democracy -- that the police forces of a state will not be used as political weapons against the opposition? Demanding that prosecutors hound your political rivals or be fired? It was, in earlier times, considered not just legitimate news, but of the kind that the press has created elaborate altars to itself over. The press as prime defenders of democracy; the ultimate check against such corruptions and manipulations

Book Round-up

I had a weird dream that I somehow traveled back in time and ate at a TCBY....well actually I just looked at the menu because I didn't have any credit cards. Kinda weird. I also asked my brother if he knew what Tivo was "Nope, never heard of it" and Google "I have never heard that word."

Then I started thinking how Tivo and Google are fun words to say.

Well, I just finished Cancer Vixen. I guess its a no brainer that I loved it. I totally dig comics & graphic novels, I am partial to some seriously witty Chick Lit, and I know how much cancer straight up sucks.

I also dreamt about my sister last night. It was before she was sick, she was healthy and we had a normal conversation. When I dream about my sister it is such a paradox. On one hand it feels weird to be interacting with her as a person "not with cancer" but on the other hand it feels really normal, because most of my life she didn't have cancer. It is great to see her in my dreams.

So Cancer Vixen - straight up awesome. My recommendation is buy or borrow ASAP.

I also finished Measure of a Man by Sidney Poitier. Yes I read it because Oprah recommended it. Well it was more like, as soon as it was released that she was hyping the book I put it on hold online at my library. Why? because I am kinda shitty that way. I wanted to be first in line HAHAHAHA! But it actually turned out to be one of the best books I have read this year.

As I become more involved in politics, I have been thinking more about religion, the purpose of my life, ethics, morals, belief systems, etc. I often feel "peerless" (except for Jeff) concerning my beliefs and thoughts. I have to say that I totally related to Sidney Poitier.

So I guess Sidney Poitier is my peer - weird.

But an excellent, inspiring, reflective book. My recommendation is get Measure of a Man from your library within the next year.

I also just finished The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness by David Ramsey. The guy is more like an annoying personal fitness trainer then an interesting author - but that's okay. He has some good, solid advice. Jeff & I were already on our way to eliminating our debt, but Ramsey's book gave me a kick in the pants to get it done. I got a free credit report and canceled all my old credit cards. Now we are down to two. I am going to pay one off this week and cancel it. We should have the other payed off by the end of 2007. I am going to cancel that one and we will never use a credit card again (only debit card). If we don't have the money to do something, well I suppose we can't afford to do it then, eh?

We will have to build up a 6 month emergency fund, but I know we can do it. Jeff has been really inspiring.....he sold his car when we first got married and we use my Echo and his truck (both paid off) and he just sold his Harley. It helps to have partner who doesn't have to have big, expensive toys. And I have totally been trying to kick my beauty product habit.

So yes...if you have debt.....you need to go buy The Total Money Makeover.

I just started (pg. 30) devilish by Maureen Johnson. I am enjoying it a lot. I am a huge fan of young adult fiction that recognizes that teens appreciate sharp, intelligent wit, while also incorporating a strong story and engaging characters. Teens are so under-estimated these days. I relish a young adult author who can engage teens (and peerless adults ha!) on a worthy level.

So go to Borders and buy devilish. Also buy An Abundance of Katherines by John Green.

Read them both and then give them to a teen.

God God! Bush's mouthpiece, Tony Snow, is freaking scaring me........almost as much as the "Bushies" addiction to power, money and greed.

Our thoughts and love are with Elizabeth Edwards as she battles cancer. I have admired Elizabeth Edwards since the last election. She is a smart, strong, and very cool role model.

I know the Edwards will stay strong. They are very admirable people.

Wow

Well I am a bit stunned by what happened in the St. Patrick Day Parade in Colorado Springs while we were gone.

Colorado Confidential has some really good articles here and here. I recommend that you read them. I am really frustrated that our local news isn't reporting the whole story - I personally felt that the group having a permit to be in the parade and that they marched last year in the parade is an integral part of the story. It makes me really sad to see our news portray these people as weird-o hippies. Yes, a lot of people who are willing to stand up for Peace are weird. I will not argue with that. Speaking up against the status quo takes a certain type of individual. An individual who is less concerned with how people perceive them and more concerned about communicating their beliefs.

If more "normal" people take the steps to speak up and disregard peer pressure - we will all be surprised who is against this war. I was impressed with 5/30 news program covering a Moveon.org vigil in Pueblo yesterday. They gave time to the "normal" looking Moveon.org members who spoke about the high cost of human life and suffering the four year old war is causing. But then 5/30 went on to dismiss the weirdo protesters in the St. Patrick Parade - so whatcha going to do?

(write 5/30 when they don't report the whole story. I do :)

But our trip to Taos was really fun........We attended the peace rally with a new friend - Peace Frog, a decorative percussion frog we bought in a gift shop before the rally.

There were a lot of hippies, students, regular peeps - approx 200 people I would say. (I didn't take pictures until the rally was winding down). There were some really good speeches, poetry, and spoken word performances. And we all marched through the streets in the end to take the message to others. Here is a pic of the Codepink peeps:

In the end it was a really surreal, but good experience. Once we put into action our sadness and frustration at this war, we felt a bit better. We will continue to speak up.

Overall, Jeff and I had a good (and much needed) vacation. I love traveling, and I especially love traveling with Jeff.

Protests Continue to Mark Fourth Anniversary of Iraq War

Protests to mark the fourth anniversary of the Iraq invasion are continuing today across the country. In New York peace activists are taking part in mass civil disobedience on Wall Street. In San Francisco, activists are planning to stage a die-in at the Federal Reserve Building. On Saturday tens of thousands of protesters took part in a March on the Pentagon. Protests were also held over the weekend in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Minneapolis, and scores of other cities. This is former U.S. soldier Terry O'Brien, a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War.

  Terry O'Brien:"I'm basically here to support the troops. I think the only way to support the troops is to be here on the streets and demand that they come home and I'm here to support the self-determination of the Iraqi people."

In New York, protesters marched by the offices of Democratic Senators Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer. The protest took place just days after Senator Clinton said she would keep troops in Iraq if she were elected president. The actor Martin Sheen and thousands of others marched in Hollywood.

• Martin Sheen: "This government, no. It does not represent the people. It's given us a horrible name, it's given us an obscene war, and they have no leadership, and no credibility. They are disgraceful. They all belong in the federal penitentiary, all of them."

Worldwide Peace Protests Held From Australia to Greece

Protests were also held around the world including in Australia, Chile, Turkey, South Korea, Malyasia and Greece. In Madrid, the Oscar winning filmmaker Pedro Almodovar, joined a massive protest of up to 400,000 people.

• Pedro Almodovar: "According to Bush, this war was going to be quick, it was only going to take a few weeks and it's been four years. I think that what's really disgusting is to read everyday on the papers the number of deaths in Iraq, that makes me feel so powerless. I find that frightening."

222 Arrested Outside the White House

In Washington, anti-war protests began on Friday night when 222 people were arrested outside the White House. Many were Christian peace activists who had just taken part in a prayer service at the National Cathedral. This is Faith Garlington who traveled to Washington from Atlanta Georgia.

• Faith Garlington: "We as Christians do not support his invasion of Iraq. We want the troops out immediately. We as Christian do not want, we do not want this war fought in the name of Christ."

Iraq Vets Launch Caravan to Build Opposition to War

Veterans for Peace and Iraq Veterans Against the War are launching a caravan today to visit military towns across the east coast to build opposition to the war within the ranks. Stops on the caravan include Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Fort Jackson in South Carolina and Fort Stewart in Georgia.

Vigils Continue Outside Homes of Nancy Pelosi

Meanwhile in San Francisco and Washington, vigils are continuing to take place outside the homes of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Protesters are urging her to cut off funding to the war.

Robert Gates: U.S. Will Remain in Middle East For Decades

On Friday, Defense Secretary Robert Gates warned that the United States plans to maintain a presence in the Middle East for decades to come. Gates made the comment during the swearing-in ceremony of Admiral William Fallon to become the new head of U.S. Central Command replacing General John Abizaid. Fallon is the first Naval officer to ever take the helm of Centcom.

Poll: 18% Of Iraqis Have Confidence in U.S. Forces

Opposition to U.S. forces in Iraq remains high four years after the start of the occupation. A new survey from the BBC found just 18 percent of Iraqis have confidence in U.S.-led forces. On Friday, over ten thousand Shiite Iraqis rallied in Sadr City to denounce plans for the U.S. to build bases in the Shiite neighborhood.

Australian Scientist: 1 Million Iraqis Killed Since Invasion

An Australian scientist is estimating the number of deaths in Iraq since the start of the conflict four years ago could be as high as one million. Dr Gideon Polya said "Using the most comprehensive and authoritative literature, and UN demographic data yields an estimate of one million post-invasion excess deaths in Iraq." In October researchers at Johns Hopkins estimated more than 650,000 Iraqis had died since the U.S. invasion.

Chlorine Attack Kills Two, Injures 350

On Saturday two Iraqis died and 350 more were poisoned when three suicide bombers drove trucks filled with chlorine into the offices of a Sunni tribal leader in Iraq.

Can you feel it?

I realize every generation has its pivotal moments, but I am beginning to understand the depth and importance of the crossroad we are standing at today in America.

How Americans respond to war escalation (aka surge) and how we vote in 2008, will have a huge impact on America's global leadership. Zbigniew Brzezinski was on the Daily Show last night. It was a very powerful, scary interview.

He basically said that Bush Jr.'s administration deserves an F (Bush Sr. got a B, Clinton a C) and that we are at a crucial time in American history. If we stay "on course" with Iraq, it will lead to staying "on course" with Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc. He said it will most likely lead to a 20 year war with the Middle-East (without much help from the rest of the globe). I have heard this prognosis before....but it really sunk in this time.

My daughter has already grown-up the past 4 years in a country "at war". Just think for a moment......if we "stay the course" our children could spend their teenage years and twenties at war.

Is that the legacy we wish to create? Hell No! I will not sacrifice my child's happiness and welfare for war-profiteering.

Time to get active. Colorado state legislators debated and passed a resolution on the war in Iraq yesterday.......and really....... take a few seconds, follow the link and read about the resolution and the cost of war on Coloradans.....please?

Monday marks the 4 year anniversary of the US war and occupation of Iraq. This weekend is important. More and more Americans are realizing now is the time to stand up for what we believe in. There will be rallies and demonstrations throughout the nation.

Jeff and I will be attending one on Saturday in Taos (a weekend of fun, music & war protestin' yee-haw :)

Wednesdays Rock!

I love Wednesdays because Jeff usually has the day off, so we can spend more time together. (Cut me some slack - we are still in our honeymoon years).

Jeff is building a garage in Hugo and I went along for the ride to help him measure it out. Hugo is a small, "well-worn" town on the eastern plains. Visiting these towns is such a weird experience for me. I am starting to grasp how realities can differ so much for Americans. We live in such a huuuge country, that our lives can be extremely diverse.


Which leads me to think about differing world-views, beliefs, and experiences. I was fortunate to travel extensively outside the US when I was very young and I believe it helped me understand different cultures at an early age. Sometimes I get really frustrated when people seem so focused on their own views that they either ignore or chastise other people's decisions and beliefs.


But I realize I still have a lot of learnin to do when it comes to American experiences, and so I am trying to push myself to learn more about Americans before dismissing their beliefs, religions, or politics myself.

This was one of the businesses on the main street. It is The Rose Petal and I believe it sells crafts and collectibles.




It is hard to get across the feeling of the town. It is such a different vibe from the "America" I am used to. I have only experienced towns like this in David Lynch films before........the weirdness factor for me is pretty high.

But it was an awesome Wednesday because I got to hang out with Jeff and he even taught me a little about preparing to build a garage.

(That's not me talking to him, heh heh)

After the trip to Hugo we had more time together before I picked up Alex from school and he did like a bazillion projects around the house and at the hardware store. I really like Wednesdays :)

Lazy = Day Light Savings

I have been feeling lazy & grumpy today, so I am going to blame it on Daylight Savings Time.......oh yeah and we are also at war. War tends to piss me off.

"Colorado's own James "SpongeDob" Dobson raised eyebrows last week in a letter to the National Association of Evangelicals, calling for the firing of their vice president for his promotion of global warming as an important issue for Christians.

Claimed Dobson, "we believe the NAE lacks the expertise to settle the controversy, and that the issue should be addressed scientifically and not theologically." Seriously, that's what he said.

Yesterday, the NAE responded -- basically telling Dobson and (lobbyist?) friends to get stuffed. As the Washington Post reports:

Rebuffing Christian radio commentator James C. Dobson, the board of directors of the National Association of Evangelicals reaffirmed its position that environmental protection, which it calls "creation care," is an important moral issue.

Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, and two dozen other conservative Christian leaders, including Gary L. Bauer, Tony Perkins and Paul M. Weyrich, sent the board a letter this month denouncing the association's vice president, the Rev. Richard Cizik, for urging attention to global warming...
This row between preachers over global warming makes Dobson, already on the defensive for blatant Republican political machinations under the guise of "religious leadership," look even more like a shill than he did last week hosting his "Meet Newt the Confessor" radio interview. It's over the top.

Does this mark the zenith of Dobson's influence in American politics? Is it all downhill from here? Is Dobson out of his purview questioning climate science as a religious reader? Is the NAE exceeding theirs by prioritizing it? Who will win this battle for the religious right's (excuse us) soul?

Guess it depends on how you feel about global warming..."

Rational Thinkers are Radical!

Fox News is desperately trying to convince the rest of America that they are "fair and balanced" and the rest of us are just "radical fringe". If "radical fringe" is code for analytical thinkers who think for themselves - well sign me up!

I post good news articles to the right....please take a sec and read the Daily Kos entry about Edwards & the Fox News debate. Fox News is trying to hit back, but it is so transparently authoritarian that most American have to realize it is blatant BS.

Why do we have to play these silly games? Its hard for me to realize that some people really do get their "news" from Fox News.

So I just chug along trying to show how dangerous it is to give away rational, analytical thought processes in favor of cool graphics and bias-filled drivel.

Today I volunteered some time at our town's charter school's library. I loved it. I really miss being around and organizing books. Plus I get a major warm fuzzy knowing I am helping get books in kids' hands. Very, very gratifying.

But let me get to today's entry......

I don't think innocent children should be imprisoned. Seems like a pretty obvious moral value right? But I have been hearing stories of this happening - right here in America! Seems unfathomable....but here is an excerpt from my ACLU newsletter email I got today:

U.S. HOLDS IMMIGRANT CHILDREN IN PRISON-LIKE CONDITIONS

The ACLU filed lawsuits on behalf of ten immigrant children this week, who are being held illegally in a Texas medium-security prison which has been converted into a "Family Residential Facility." Approximately 400 people are currently detained at the T. Don Hutto facility in Taylor, Texas, half of them children.

The lawsuits filed against Michael Chertoff, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, as well as six officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), charge that these children are being imprisoned under inhumane conditions while their parents await immigration decisions.

In a facility that is still functionally and structurally a prison, children are required to wear prison garb, detained in small cells for 11-12 hours each day where they cannot keep food and toys, and denied all privacy, even when using the toilet. According to legal papers, some children did not go outdoors in the fresh air during the whole month of December 2006.

Despite urgent needs, many children lack access to adequate medical, dental, and mental health treatment, and are denied meaningful educational opportunities. Guards frequently discipline children by threatening to separate them permanently from their parents, and children are prohibited from having contact visits with non-detained family members.

"The choice is not between enforcement of immigration laws and humane treatment of immigrant families. There are various alternatives under which both can exist," said Lisa Graybill, Legal Director of the ACLU of Texas.

I don't understand how this is happening. How can we, as Americans, justify this to ourselves? I was raised to help the suffering....especially children. Is my value system just a naive dream? Is the America I was raised to love and respect just a mirage?

Is it unpatriotic of me to believe in equality and justice for all? Even immigrant children?

It is heartbreaking on many different levels.

Let the Sun Shine In

I woke up this morning to beautiful 65 degree weather. This is a major deal because this winter has been depressing for me. Too much snow, too much mud, too much being cooped up indoors. So I was really happy today to see the sun. I hope this is the start of a long, warm walk to Spring.

This is an excellent way to view (and subscribe) to different politicians' videos/speeches. We live in a time where technology can grant us instant access to candidates' platforms & speeches. It is so cool! And not only that, it helps us be informed without having to travel far.

The more people who choose to be informed about our government the better off we all will be!

Silence & apathy is not patriotic. It is dangerous.

Nyquil - Friend or Foe?

Blah, I have been fighting a sore throat/cold for the past two days and it sucks. I have been taking (one) nyquil at night, hoping it will help. The results are a persistent desire to sleep the day away and a totally swollen face.....luverly. I have also been taking garlic. (I won't mention the digestive consequences of that choice).

I am hoping that it is working because I don't feel totally strung out yet, only achy and whiny.

My poor, poor husband has to put up with my insufferable misery and complaints. How did I wind up with such a great guy? Don't know....but I am one lucky sisterfish!

I made a cake for his birthday. Alex helped decorate it - but I have to take credit for the messed up, wobbly lettering - ha!
